Mal along with Zoë and Jayne are enjoying a drink and game of Chinese checkers while getting a tip on a job, when someone in the bar loudly toasts unification day, which marked the end of the independents warring the the Alliance. Mal approaches him which leads to a bar room brawl, with Zoë throwing the first punch and Jayne doesn't feel the need to help out too much. Wash swoops in with Serenity to get them out. Mal and Zoë go up to the cockpit where Kaylee informs them that the passengers are fine. Wash asks Mal if he's getting his wife (Zoë) into more trouble Mal explains he just wanted conveniently wanted a nice drink on that day and that he got a job for them.
Meanwhile, Simon is trying to help calm and comfort his sister River. Mal comes to wash his wounded hand and explains that they didn't attract any Alliance with the brawl. Shepherd Book is getting more acquainted with Serenity when he runs into Mal when he is leaving the medical room. Book compliments Simon's strength as they walk to the engine room where Mal finds it a mess and continue to walk, looking for her. Mal has asked why he is on Serenity and not out taking care of demons of sorts and his reply is that he has plenty to deal with on the ship. Mal explains that while he is welcome on the ship "God ain't".
Mal continues on his own to look for Kaylee. He finds that Kaylee has been distracted, as Inara has been pampering her by playing with her hair and such. Mal interrupts the fun, barging in and exchanging some light hearted verbal jabs with Inara, and sends Kaylee back to work and warns Inara about the coming job he has set up with a bad guy named Niska.
Mal, Zoë and Jayne go to meet Niska on a skyplex and are also introduced to his large henchman Crow as well as victim of his, his wife's nephew to be exact, proving that he really means business. The plan is to steal some alliance goods off of a train in Paradiso. So Zoë and Mal board the train and find the goods, running into a car of Alliance men, though they don't do anything to get in their way. Kaylee is setting up for Jayne to be lowered over the train to scoop up the goods. Simon stops to find out what's going on from Kaylee. When Jayne comes in he tells Simon that he thinks Mal will happily sell out Simon and River to the Alliance men when the time is right which irks Kaylee.
Serenity hovers over top the train and Jayne is lowered to collect the goods as well as Zoë and Mal. But they are interrupted by the authorities so the goods and a shot-in-the-leg Jayne get back to Serenity but Zoë and Mal are left to deal with the planet's local authorities. On Serenity, Simon patches up Jayne and gives him a drug. Jayne is loudly demanding the go to Niska to deliver the goods even though the captain and Zoë are still stuck on the planet.
The local authorities are trying to figure who stole the goods (an Alliance officer refuses to send any of the men, who were there anyway on the train, to help in the investigation). The sheriff seems fair but he also means business. He interrogates the pair, who are posing as newlyweds looking for work, and he seems suspicious of them, but moves on to interrogating others. On Serenity, Jayne continues to try to take control and take the goods to Niska but he passes out, thanks to the drug Simon gave him. Inara ends up going to the planet's authorities, explaining that the pair are runaway servants of hers and since her records as a Companion check out fine with the authorities, they get away clean.
However, Mal had realized while they were on the planet that what they stole was much needed medicine for the town and decides he will not give it to Niska. Unfortunately Niska's men are there to finish the deal so a fight ensues when the men won't take the money back to Niska and leave the goods. But the crew of Serenity manages to subdue the henchmen.
So Mal and Zoë go to the outskirts of Paradiso to leave the medicines when the sheriff spots them. They check out the cargo and find its complete and exchanging understanding words about the situation before the sheriff let's them go on their way. Back at the ship, Mal tries to reason with Crow the henchmen, telling him to give Niska his money back and forget about the deal. Crow says he will hunt him down and kill him so Mal kills him. The next henchman is all for Mal's plan.
Then Simon tends to Mal' wounds from the day's events as they discuss River's state of slipping in and out of reality. Meanwhile River is in her room mumbling about hands of blue. Somewhere on an Alliance spacecraft men with blue gloves are trying to find River.

Memorable Quotes:

Mal "Kaylee? What the hell's going on in the engine room?
Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?"
Jayne"You know what the chain of command is?
It's the chain I go get and beat you with until you
understand who's in ruttin' command here. "
Mal "There's just an acre of you fellas, ain't there?"
(to Zoë) "This is why we lost, you know. Superior numbers."
Zoë "Thanks for the re-enactment, sir."
Mal "Well, what about you, Shepherd?
How come you're flying about with us brigands?
I mean, shouldn't you be off bringing religiosity to the Fuzzie-Wuzzies or some such?"
Book "Oh, I got heathens aplenty right here."
Mal "If I'm your mission, Shepherd, best give it up.
You're welcome on my boat.
God ain't."
Mal "Well they tell you: never hit a man with a closed fist.
But it is, on occasion, hilarious."
