Mal and Jayne are riding a horse and wagon through down a stream (Mal disguised as a woman) when they are confronted by some bandits whom they proceed to fight, with Zoë appearing from the back of the wagon with her guns blazing. Victorious, that night the crew celebrates in the town that they were hired to defend. As Mal is having his share of alcoholic drinks, a girl places a headdress on his head and he proceeds to dance with her while an older man gives a drunken Jayne a stick that that makes rain sounds.
When the crew of Serenity is packing up to leave the next day Mal finds a stowaway. When he questions her she explains that she had given him the headdress and the drink and danced with him and that was all part of a marriage ceremony. Mal is completely in shock at the whole thing while the rest of the crew, save Inara, finds it quite funny. Wash explains that they can’t take her back to her town because the Alliance is now there. The girl is in tears and runs off as Mal continues to explain that he is not her husband.
Mal catches up with the girl, Saffron, still crying, and explains that he would not make a good husband but she is persistent, and cooks for him. Shepard Book warns Mal that he is going to a “special hell” if he takes advantage of her, but he doesn’t seem to want any part of this while the majority of the crew continues to find it entertaining and Inara is obliviously upset at the situation.
Jayne, feeling cheated by the situation, offers to trade his prized gun, Vera, for the girl but Mal reprimands him and explains that she is not a commodity. He also explains to Saffron that she can find good work and doesn’t have to be subservient to men. He also notices he is starting to open up to her, telling her a little about his family. Meanwhile there are a couple of guys eyeing Serenity, planning on stealing it.
Mal returns to his room to find a naked Saffron waiting for him. She tries to seduce Mal; though he fights it in the end, they kiss and he promptly passes out. Saffron them moves onto the cockpit and tries to seduce Wash but has to resort to kicking him in the head, because he would not cheat on Zoë. She locks him out of the room, wires the ship to certain coordinates and then seals the door shut. She makes a run for the empty shuttle to make an escape but is confronted by Inara. Saffron then begins to seduce Inara but then an alarm interrupts them.
Saffron escapes as Inara looks for Mal, finds him unconscious on the floor of his room. She kisses him in her relief that he is alive and she passes out too. When Mal wakes up the crew is around him and they explain that Saffron had poisonous lipstick which caused him to pass out and Inara insists that she hit her head and didn’t kiss anyone. When the crew examines the cockpit they find the impressive rewiring job Saffron did and realize they can’t turn around. Inara also informs the crew that Saffron has talents as a Companion. Meanwhile the men looking to capture Serenity watch, waiting for Serenity to fall in their laps and comment on Saffron’s talent.
Wash and Kaylee try to get back control of the ship as they realize they are headed for trouble: an electromagnetic net that would kill the crew and deliver the ship in good condition to the guys working with Saffron. Mal plan is for Jayne to put his gun Vera in a space suit and shoot at the netting ship. This is successful; they blow up the ship and get control back of Serenity.
Mal tracks down Saffron on a planet and finds out she was working for the elders of the town they had saved earlier. He asks her what her real name is which surprises her and then he knocks her unconscious. Back on the ship, Mal asks Inara what really caused her to pass out and she thinks Mal knows that she kissed him but he is actually thinking the women kissed each other.

Memorable Quotes:
Book"If you take sexual advantage of her,
you're going to burn in a very special level of hell.
A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater."
Jayne: "See Vera, get yourself dressed up real nice,
you get taken somewhere special"
Inara: "So, explain to me again why Zoe wasn't in the dress?"
"Tactics, woman! Needed her in the back.
Besides, them soft cotton dresses feel kind of nice.
There's a whole airflow."
Inara: "And you would know that because...?"
Mal: "You can't open the book of my life and jump in the middle.
Like woman, I'm a mystery."
Inara: "Best keep it that way. I withdraw the question."
Mal:"My days of taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."
Bandit #1: "And I think maybe you're gonna
give me a little one-on-one time with the missus."
Husband) Jayne:
"Oh, I think you might wanna reconsider that last part.
See, I married me a powerful ugly creature."
(Wife) Mal:
"How can you say that? How can you shame me in front of new people?"
(Husband) Jayne:
"If I could make you purtier, I would."
Mal: "You are not the man I met a year ago."
Mal: "Someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill 'em right back!"

Mal: "Now think real hard. You been bird-dogging this township a while now.
They wouldn't mind a corpse of you. Now you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell,
but if your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty flowered bonnet, I will end you."
