Joss Whedon on the set of Firefly

Joss Whedon, director, creator, and genius mastermind, is also a writer-- and a great one at that.

Although he gained fame for his work on and creation of the TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and of course Firefly, you may be surprised by some of his movie writing credits, which include Toy Story, Alien: Resurrection, Titan A.E. (along with Ben Edlund), and uncredited work on Twister, X-Men, and more.

He has also written comic books, including Dark Horse's Fray and Buffy - Season 8 and Marvel's Astonishing X-Men and Runaways.  He and Firefly writer Brett Matthews wrote three very sucessful comic books entitled Those Left Behind to serve as a prequel to the movie Serenity.  And they are currently working on two new Serenity-verse projects:  Better Days will tell the account of what happens when the crew actually sees some good luck, and an as-yet untitled story will reveal some of the much-speculated story of Shepherd Book.Joss Whedon and cast on the set of Serenity

Whedon got his start working on the TV series Roseanne, but felt that he could do more elsewhere.  The "big break" came when his script for Buffy the Vampire Slayer became a major motion picture, and although he didn't like how it turned out, he demonstrated his typical "lemons into lemonade" personality and created a hit television series out of it.

Firefly gives us the very best of Joss Whedon: His vision, his daring, his love for great compelling characters, and his sharp, surprising humor.  His characters and stories maintain a keen sense of realism and believability, while always leaving room for hope.  Like all true creative geniuses, he not only pushes the boundaries of what a show can do, but also of what it can be.

"Out of Gas""Firefly is the source of probably more joy and pain than anything I've done.  It was to me a new kind of storytelling."

Keep an eye out for Whedon's next project-- He will be teaming up with Eliza Dushku ("Faith" on Buffy) and Tim Minear for a new TV show called Dollhouse to air in 2009.  Joy!
