The Ballad of Serenity
The title song of Firefly, known as The Ballad of Serenity, has become nothing less than the theme song for an entire community of people of all ages. It embodies a fierce independence that resonates through the bones and sinews of the lives of people who were promised one thing, but were handed something very different. An anthem for all who listen.
Written by Firefly Series creator, Joss Whedon and sung by the master of the Texas Steel Guitar, gravel-voiced Sonny Rhodes, it is a song of defiance in the face of unsurmountable authority, and of the paradise of freedom. A song of loss and of determination. It is the theme song of a will to live a deliberate life in order to be free. It has become the theme song of a generation of people who are no longer satisfied with what is handed to them, but who want something deeper, something more dangerous, something for which they will give their lives because it is the yearning of every living being: Freedom!
There is no desperation in the music. There is only a clear determination to live and live as one chooses. To live on one's terms regardless of the consequenses. The warm, twangy, western sound of The Ballad of Serenity forms the backdrop in which the characters of the series live lives that are hardscrabble but resourceful and loyal to the end.
In the face of all odds and fears, these people live for one goal: Do the Job, Keep Flying.
