Interview:

Amy Kingman,Browncoats.com:What does Firefly mean to you and how do you feel you express it in your artwork?
Susan Stoner aka Flyhead:Firefly means more to me than I ever thought a TV show would or could. I love the characters, the humour, the universe that Serenity inhabits the music and everything about the show. Generally, I don’t like to rewatch video, TV or movies. Firefly is different. I’ve watched all the episodes numerous times. It’s just so darned good! And once I joined the OB, it became something totally different for me. It became a community. A family. And it also became a mission – to save Firefly.

As for Firefly related art, I have not created all that much. With the likes of 11th Hour, Irish, Lux’s South Park stuff and dozens of other talented souls, it’s never seemed necessary! Also, I’m an old school artist. Most of my life’s work has been made by hand. I am just beginning to get a handle on the computer software and this whole web thing is still a bit beyond me! *L*

But the things I have made- Serenity Saloon Drink Menus, an Alligator Point T-Shirt design, the fan banner for the cast and crew and various one of kind items for Shindigs- these things have been about sharing moments with my fellow Browncoats. I absolutely love that.
Amy:You created the BDM movie banner for the cast. How did you come up with the idea?
Susan: Initially, I came up with the idea of the black (space) background. This just seemed natural to me as we are about to let Joss (Whedon), once again, “Take us out to the black.” After that I started reading all the suggestions in the Banner Design thread at the OB and incorporating as many ideas as I could into the design. It was tough going there for a while, as ideas were being posted fast and furious! But Psyche, My Orange Hat, RJ Roberson, Shiny, Ying and others were all there helping me stay focused and organised. I used lots of ideas that others gave me. Hopefully, everyone felt like they had a say. That was my wish that the banner was truly from all of us, not just in sharing the cost, but in the creation as well. And kudos to Dferguson for coming up with the idea of sending a banner in the first place.
Amy: How does it make you feel now that the cast have seen it?
And have enjoyed it so much.
Susan:Obviously, it makes me feel great. But you know what tickled me even more? When Chris Buchanan sent those photos to me and I knew I was the first fan in the world seeing photos of our Big Damned Heroes IN COSTUME AND ON LOCATION! That was unbelievable to me! The banner in the background was secondary to those smiling faces! And even though I had to endure a little peer pressure that day, I was also tickled to share them with Haken first. I don’t visit his site everyday, but that man deserves tons of credit for all he has done for Firefly/Serenity. He keeps a mighty fine house. I was damn proud to give him the honour of posting the photos.

Amy: Do you have a favourite piece of Firefly art that you’ve done?
Susan: Umm. The Floating Cappy head? Okay, maybe I shouldn’t cop to that crime! Seriously, it’s hard to say. The banner is by far the biggest and definitely got the most exposure, but I have given some very small tokens to various Browncoats I’ve met at Shindigs and their gratitude, laughter and sincerity were worth MUCH to me.
Amy: Is there something from Firefly you WON’T draw for any particular reasons?
Susan: There’s LOTS I won’t draw. Mainly because I can’t. That and I am not disciplined enough to attempt it. I did try to create a vector drawing of Adam Baldwin to give to him as a gift for his birthday last year. But since it looks NOTHING like him, I have never shown it to a living soul! *L* I’m pitiful.
Amy: What style of art do you find more pleasing to do? (Or which style do you think brings out the meanings of Firefly for you?)
Susan: I am drawn to commercial or graphic art. I like working with type, although I can’t afford a truly good library of fonts and I like to create advertising pieces. I have a fairly extensive background in silk screened garments and signage.

The guerrilla marketing campaigns have been tons of fun for me. That is definitely the Firefly art I enjoy created and promulgating the most. That’s because it is all about our shared goal of saving Firefly and promoting the DVDs and Serenity. I am just as happy posting 11th’s posters as my own work. I appreciate effective signage in any form, by any one- be it on a wall or on someone’s back or monitor (I’ve got Irish’s wallpaper on my work computer.)

I am currently sitting on a killer Blue Sun t-shirt design and am also thinking about making a pin and selling both of them. I already have the pin design done too. It’s just that pins are fairly expensive on the first go-round due to set up charges.

Also, when I was at the Orlando Shindig this spring, Cyby showed me some of the fan videos that our fellow Browncoats have created. They were amazing. I was completely blown away by a couple of them- Goosebumps, tears, the whole sha-bang.  I have two music videos in my mind that I would love to created, if I can find the time to learn how and can get my hands on the necessary equipment/software.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. I know browncoats everywhere appreciate your contributions to the Browncoat Fandom, and for getting the word out to them that need it told.
Brief Susan Stoner Bio: A devoted Ohio Fillionare and Browncoat, Fly is a regular on the Firefly board, and has recently sent her BDM banner to the cast members. Fly had owned her own sign shop (which she ran with her partner) for 12 years, getting one of her pieces published in Successful Sign Designs. Although she has a bachelors degree in Art Education, Fly has never actually taught, instead focusing on being a more commercial artist. She currently works as a production and creative artist for a private corporation, which makes motivational awards for students.Susie, is a passionate follower of Firefly, has certainly done her part in keeping everything “Still Flying.”
